((...I think I lost my train of thought before I finished this post, and anyway, I'm a little rusty at this. So please forgive the incoherency.))
It was a day much like any other. Bright autumn leaves coated the trees, and occasionally came swirling down like fire-colored rain falling from the sky. Some of the highest branches were now bare, reaching into the sky like thin, dark fingers grasping for something unseen. The sun was still high overhead, but provided less warmth than in earlier months; it served as a reminder that colder weather wasn't far off.
In the SpringClan camp, evidence of the season was seemingly everywhere. Dry leaves crunched underfoot, making it nearly impossible for any cat to move about unheard. Spots of color could be seen drifting along with the current of the Splashing Creek, which could be seen from the spacious clearing. Even the most seasoned of warriors might have been hard-pressed to ignore the fluttering leaves in the air, and those who were less strict might have even found themselves tumbling about in a kit-like effort to reach every leaf before it touched the ground.
Despite the day's natural energy, sounds of a cat just awakening came from the warriors' den. A small, gray shape was slowly uncurling, before it thoroughly stretched itself out.
Heartnose yawned, bleary-eyed for a moment or two, before turning his attention to his haphazardly arranged fur. He paid little attention to the afternoon light shining in; an outing with the dawn patrol gave a perfectly good reason for him to have slept this late into the day, so he wasn't alarmed by it in the slightest. He was far more concerned, now, with restoring his appearance to at least a semi-acceptable state.
After a quick wash, the LightCat warrior sat up fully and gave his right ear a scratch. The fog of sleep was slowly lifting from his eyes, and awareness was returning in its wake. But still, something was nagging at him in the back of his mind, like a dream retreating from the edges of his consciousness...as though he'd forgotten something important.
For a minute, Heartnose sat in silence, trying to remember what it was that could have slipped his mind. The tip of his tail twitched in thought, while he waited for the memory to come back to him. But with each passing moment, the feeling lessened, until at last, it had been entirely replaced by the crisp, cool scent of the autumn air.
Fluffing his fur out, the small, gray cat shook his head. If whatever he'd forgotten wasn't important enough for him to remember now, it obviously wasn't essential. What was essential, however, was for him to get outside and enjoy some sunshine, before leaf-bare came and covered everything with frost. And, his stomach reminded him with a grumble, it had been a while since his last meal; but then again, since the end of green-leaf, prey had started to become scarcer. Perhaps once he had eaten, he should ask about organizing a hunting patrol.
With fresh energy flowing through him, Heartnose gave a final stretch, and let the last layers of sleep fall away from his mind, along with that tiny, bothersome feeling of forgetting. Then, with a spring in his step, he trotted out of the den and into the sunlight.
Although he had only been asleep for a relatively short time, it somehow felt like the end of a very long night.
